No, not Barney Stinson. Barney the Purple Dinosaur.
He sang and danced with us for 17 years before waving goodbye one last time, on September 18, 2009, and for the last ten years, he’s remained a tiny purple dinosaur toy.
It seems with the Genie getting to come back out of his lamp again, old Barney also wants a second coming. And Daniel Kaaluya is making it happen.
If the name doesn’t ring a bell, let me help you jog your memory. While Black Panther, Kick Ass 2, and Widows would all be great examples, you may best remember Daniel from his breakout movie, Get Out.
So essentially, the lead actor from the hit thriller that made us all afraid of rich families in remote counties is co-producing the film about a friendly dinosaur that comes alive through the power of children’s imagination.
What could possibly go wrong?
“Working with Daniel Kaaluya will enable us to take a completely new approach to Barney that will surprise audiences and subvert expectations,” said Robert Brenner, from Mattel Films. The film is part of Mattel’s current push into the live-action film industry, which includes upcoming films Barbie and Hot Wheels.
While Brenner makes it seem as if the new Barney film will feature a radical new dinosaur, the child in you can rest easy knowing Daniel isn’t going to turn the nostalgic character into a Jurrasic Park-hopeful.
“Barney was a ubiquitous figure in many of our childhoods, then he disappeared into the shadows, left misunderstood. We’re excited to explore this compelling modern-day hero and see if his message of ‘I love you, you love me’ can stand the test of time,” stated Kaluuya.
Well, slow clap to you sir. The very essence of Barney is loving and accepting everyone. We couldn’t imagine rationalizing a Barney who was anything but this. And Kaaluya clearly gets that.
So while this new Barney may be a dramatic surprise to us all, we’re sure it will be a pleasant one. After all, he is in great hands.
