They’ll soon be there for us again. Not that they ever really left.
Contain thy self. Nothing has been confirmed just yet. But a ‘Friends’ reunion is as close to happening as it’s ever been.
First reported by the Hollywood Reporter, rumor has it that while a deal is yet to be struck, the cast and original creators are all on board with the idea.
This is a surprising turn of events, given how adamant the stars have been through the years about not reviving the show.
Mathew Perry once said he had nightmares in which the cast reunite for a reunion but nobody cares. “We ended on such a high. We can’t beat it. Why would we go and do it again?”
While the nightmares are just a Chandler problem, other cast members shared similar sentiments.
Jennifer Anniston recently told Howard Stern “If there was a reboot of the show, it won’t be even close to as good as what it was, so why do it.”
In light of this, the recent news is quite confusing. Could it be HBO’s magical powers of creating award-winning shows that is drawing the cast back together?
After all, the reunion is being pitched by WarnerMedia-backed streaming service, HBO Max. While Netflix has been the perennial streaming home of the original Friends, HBO Max will take over the rights to the show come 2020.
With that in mind, a reunion, which we guess would be more like a movie than a reboot, might make sense for the new streaming service.
Fans of Breaking Bad were recently given closure as to the fate of Jesse Pinkman after he’s freed by Walter in the series finale. The movie ‘El Camino’ wasn’t exactly a reboot of the acclaimed series, but did well in continuing the story without degrading the original product.
We suspect the rumored Friends reunion to be along the same lines. While it won’t be a total reboot, it will serve to give closure as to whether Joey ever finds his ‘lobster’, if Phoebe is able to start a happy family, if Chandler is actually capable of being a father, if Monica has lost her cleaning ability with two terror twins, and of course, if Ross and Rachel actually stay together.
Of course, this is just our wild guess, fueled by our own desires to see the family of friends grace our screens just one last time.
So, until then, we have no choice but to stay tuned.
