As the famous saying goes, it’s never too late to (fill in the blank). Well, it’s especially true when that blank is filled with ‘come out of the closet.’
To further extend the celebration of Pride month, 90-year-old Kenneth Felts from Colorado finally told his family and friends that he is proudly gay in May (the rhyme is a lovely touch, Kenneth) ahead of this year’s June pride month celebration.
During the past few months of quarantine, Felts began to write an autobiography about his life story. While writing, he recalled past emotions and memories that prompted him to share an emotional confession with his daughter: “I wish I’d never left Phillip.”
Though she had never heard her father speak of him before, she clocked onto what he meant right away.
In an interview with Good Morning America, Felts explained that Phillip was the love of his life that he had met back in the 50s. “For a long time, the truth was buried deep down in my soul and I adopted a straight persona because I did not think I had another choice,” he said. “People are much more accepting today, and I felt I had to find the courage [to do it].”
After first coming out to his daughter, Felts was then ready to tell the rest of the world in a heartwarming Facebook post. Donning a rainbow hoodie, he wrote ‘I am free, I am gay and I am out.’
Kenneth has said the response has been overwhelming, in a good way of course. “I’ve had several people say they were on the verge of making this decision, and my story has helped them,” he said. “I just hope people understand they’ll be accepted and it’ll be much more positive than they might assume. Certainly, that was the case for me.”
For those of you hoping for a romantic ending like The Notebook, though, unfortunately reality had a different plan in mind.
One of Felts’ supporters offered to help him track down his true love, but sadly it was found that Phillip had passed away two years ago. In another Facebook post, Kenneth shared his memory of Phillip with his followers. ‘The whole world now knows what a loving man he was with me and to me while we were together,’ he wrote.
One of the loving and wonderful people who has been reading my messages on my coming out and search for Phillip…Posted by Kenneth Felts on Thursday, June 25, 2020
Kenneth is a shining example that no matter what age you are, it’s always the right time to come out as long as your comfortable. Especially in a rainbow hoodie on Facebook.
