A nice reminder that we should all never stop believing.
It’s difficult to keep faith in humanity when the news only shows tragedy after tragedy but there’s always that one story, like a glimmering diamond in the rough, that immediately makes us believe that the world is full of more wonderful people than we thought. Today, we believe once again, thanks to the owner of an antique shop.
When 23-year-old John Capron spotted an old piano sitting outside a ReMARKable Cleanouts store, in Norwood, Massachusetts, he couldn’t help but ask the salesperson if he could play it. Capron sat down and started playing Journey’s “Don’t Stop Believing”, a classic rock song most of us know and love. Surprised, the store owner, Mark Waters, filmed him and posted the video on his Facebook page where it went viral. So far, the video has been viewed more than 83,000 times.
After seeing how moved people were by Capron’s musical talent, Mark Waters knew he had to find him again. So, he got help from his online community with the mission to find the mysterious piano man. After a while, he succeeded and met with Capron with one purpose: to gift him a piano. No, not the little piano he was playing the other day, but a beautiful Steinway piano.
“I’m a helper. A giver. I like to give. When I give to you and you smile, that makes me feel good. If you can make somebody else happy, bring a little joy in their heart,” Waters told WBZ.
Capron’s musical journey began as a teen. His mother died when he was only 7, and he spent eight years moving from one foster home to another in Boston. Eventually, he decided to walk away from his last foster home and ended up at a sanctuary for homeless teens.
This place saved him because that’s where he fell in love with music and found his purpose. It was his counselor who taught him how to play the Journey song that made him viral. Right as he began playing it, “something just clicked”, Capron said.
It made sense that Capron, after finding out he had gone viral, was completely shocked. “The reaction has been amazing — and all from that one little moment,” he said. “I started crying when I learned that they wanted to give me a piano. I’ve never owned one before and I couldn’t afford one.”
The power of music is just too strong, and John Capron is living proof of it. It can be a way to express yourself, to connect with others, and to deal with your emotions. Music is the language of the heart, and Capron spoke to the hearts of thousands. The world IS a good place!
