We know what you’re thinking. No, you can’t watch your favorite Netflix movie’s here.
Picture this: it’s a Friday afternoon and the year is 2003. You just got out of school after another long day in 3rd grade. But that’s okay, because now you’re on your way to the magical place that is Blockbuster. You can’t wait to rent the “Hey Arnold!” movie for the fourth time—and grab some snacks while you’re there. Sure, the life of a 9-year-old can be hard, but nothing beats the distinctive smell of those carpeted floors as you walk through the aisles of your local Blockbuster to pick one of the thousands of DVDs they have on display.
It’s been about 10 years since we said good-bye to Blockbuster, and we can’t help but feel nostalgic when we think about the great times we had thanks to it. The world’s last Blockbuster store is located in Bend, Oregon, but now it’s more than just a store. The last Blockbuster has been transformed into an Airbnb, and you can stay there for just $4 USD per night—talk about “making it a Blockbuster night”!
This transformation included creating a living room within the store, going full-90’s with the decoration and, of course, an enormous television (not a flat-screen, but an actual chunky, era-appropriate one!) for you to enjoy any of the VHS tapes the store has to offer.
Sandi Harding, the store manager, mentioned that COVID-19 was a true plan-wrecker when it came to what she had planned for the store. However, she saw this situation as an opportunity to finally turn the last Blockbuster into an unforgettable Airbnb. “With everybody being stuck at home and re-experiencing family time together, we thought it would be fun to enjoy some family time in a throwback ’90s environment,” Harding said.
Starting on August 17, you’ll be able to re-live the experience of having an old-school movie night for only $4 a night. You’ll be able to get cozy on the sofa (that turns into a bed, of course) after walking through the aisles of the store to pick the perfect VHS to watch. And a movie night isn’t complete without snacks, which is why you can get them onsite. They’ve really thought about everything!
As soon as the bookings open, you’ll get to reserve a one-night stay for September 18, 19, or 20. But if you don’t live in Bend, don’t worry! You can still re-live the Blockbuster experience by purchasing classic Blockbuster merchandise on the store’s website.
The worldwide closing of the majority of Blockbuster stores marked the end of an era of innocence, fun, and hundreds of memories. But although the memories shall remain with us for a lifetime, this Airbnb experience might help us bring them back—even if it’s for just one night.
