Oxford is older than the Aztec Empire??
Time is a weird concept, and it is extremely difficult for us to put it into perspective. Do you know what a hundred years look like? And what about a thousand? The more we think about it, the weirder it may seem.
This happens frequently when we take a look back at our history and realize just how long ago or how recent a certain historical event was. Today, we want to blow your mind with some facts you may not have thought about yet, but that will change the way you perceive time. Ready to be shocked?
Marilyn Monroe and Queen Elizabeth II were born in the same year
Both were born in 1926, and they even met each other once at the premiere of The Battle of the River Plate in London’s Leicester Square. They even took a picture of them, where Marilyn Monroe was in the receiving line of guests and shook the young Queen’s hand.
Mammoths were still alive while Egyptians were building the Pyramids
Wooly mammoths still existed until about 1650 BC. Meanwhile, the oldest of the pyramids in Egypt, the Pyramid of Djoser, was built between 2630 BC and 2611 BC. This means that while the pyramids were being built, somewhere in the world mammoths were still walking around.
Conspiracy theory: the Ancient Egyptians used the mammoths to carry their colossal blocks. Prove us wrong.
The University of Oxford existed hundreds of years before the founding of the Aztec Empire
The Aztec Empire was founded around 1428, when three Nahua altepetl city-states created an alliance. Meanwhile, across the Atlantic, the University of Oxford was already teaching while the Aztecs were ruling the Valley of Mexico. While the university has no precise date of foundation, there is evidence that teaching goes as far back as 1096.
Star Wars came out the same year as the last guillotine execution happened in France
In 1977 we saw two major historical events happen: the Star Wars Episode IV premiere, and the last guillotine execution in France. The last person to be sentenced to death by guillotine was Hamida “Pimp Killer” Djandoubi, who was beheaded for torturing and murdering a young woman.
Cleopatra lived closer to the invention of the cell phone than to the building of the Great Pyramid
The legendary Queen of the Nile died in 30 BC, 2,500 years after the Great Pyramid of Giza was finished. However, she died only about 2,000 years before Motorola produced the first mobile phone in 1973. Crazy? We agree.
Cars, airplanes, and the telegraph were all introduced within 18 years of each other
While these three inventions seem so far apart from one another, all of them were invented in a lapse of 18 years. 1885 saw the invention of the Benz Patent-Motorwagen. Nine years later, the first wireless telegraph system was built by Marconi. Nine years after that, the Wright Brothers flew for the first time in the Kitty Hawk.
The Ottoman Empire existed the second to last time the Chicago Cubs won the World Series
It doesn’t seem like the curse of the Chicago Cubs lasted for a long time… until you put it into perspective. Before the Cubs won the World Series in 2016, the last time they had won ever since was is 1908. During that year, the Ottoman Empire still existed. It was dissolved after defeat in World War 1 and became what today is Turkey.
